Environment-friendly aquaculture technologies are now benefiting fisherfolk in coastal as well as landlocked communities in central Philippines. Such technologies include those on raising mudcrab ("alimango") in mangorve, rearing tilapia in net cages, growing hatchery-reared bangus fry, producing grouper (lapu-lapu) and catfish in ponds, and culturing oysters and mussel (tahong) in rafts. These and other technologies have been the product of intensive scientific studies by research institutions, among them the Tigbauan-based Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD), University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV), and Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR).en
