A new strain of tilapia suited to the cool-elevated areas of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) has been launched for field-testing. Specifically, genetically engineered to withstand the climate in the northern Luzon highlands, the cold-tolerant strain was developed by researchers of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR). Its development stems from the observation of fish growers in the Cordillera that the tilapia fingerlings they purchase from lowland sources has stunted growth when raised in the highlands.
