The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and the province of Guimaras have pooled their resources in offering "alternative livelihood" to the province's marginal fishers through a mari-culture park. "We are encouraging local governments to go into this venture to help their residents particularly the fishers," explained Dr. Sonia Seville, BFAR chief in Western Visayas. She defined "mariculture simply as aquaculture in marine water." Igang Mariculture Park, Seville added, would initially benefit the fishers in Guimaras. It would also serve as a stopover in educational field trips by people from other provinces and regions. She added that the park which was launched August 4, would work not only as a source of livelihood but a model for other local government units to replicate.
