The Philippines is continuously expanding its capacity to serve the growing mud crab market as the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) has enabled crablets distribution in Luzon, Panay, and Mindanao provinces. Dr. Joebert D. Toledo, SEAFDEC aquaculture chief, said mud crab seed production from hatcheries helped established by SEAFDEC has increased production rate from 26,000 crablets in 1998 to the present 205,000 crablets. These crablets have a 0.6 to 2 centimeter carapace width.
