The Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center based in Tigbauan, Iloilo recently conducted a month-long first-ever training on "Seaweed Tissue Culture and Sporulation" in the Philippines. Held from February 19 to March 23, the training sought to share the techniques and results of the breakthroughs the SEAFDEC has made in its seaweed strain improvement program through the biotechnology facility awarded by the Government of Japan to the Philippines, Department of Agriculture. The six participants, who are core personnel of the government's seaweed program, attended lectures and field trips on biology and seaweed farming and conducted laboratory work.
