| local.seafdecaqd.extract | Adecor, Island Garden City of Samal - Fifteen years ago, giant clams locally known as "Taklobo" were already considered rare in the areas of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) as their numbers have continued to decrease due to over consumption by humans. It was in 2009 that residents in Barangay Adecor in Kaputian District in IGACOS realized the important role that giant clams play in corals and other marine lives in the area and that the decline in their numbers would be fatal to the very sources of their livelihood. "Timely intervention of the community and their support groups led to the preservation of giant clams in this part of IGACOS," said Xavier Lopez of the Davao del Norte State College (DNSC) the head of the Marine Reserve Park in Adecor. Lopez said that DNSC has been providing long-term technical assistance to the community and has supported the formation and strengthening of the Adecor United Fisherfolks Organization (ACUFOR). | en |
