The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center- Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) is geared towards production-oriented research activities. AQD Chief Dan Baliao believes this will enhance capture fisheries that has since been dwindling for the past years. It is recognized that aquaculture can contribute significantly to fish production. Several commercially viable species that will be promoted by SEAFDEC/AQD for production are: milkfish, tilapia, grouper, pompano and crustaceans including black tiger prawn, giant freshwater prawn and Indian white prawn. Aquaculture has been responsible for the growth in the supply of fish for human consumption. AQD Chief Baliao stresses his concern to meet the ever-increasing demand for fish where aquaculture can contribute significantly, hence, the need to intensify promotion of production of viable species through aquaculture. Efforts to strengthen DA/BFAR-SEAFDEC/AQD collaboration to enhance technology transfer are now in being worked out by the two institutions.en
