In the late 1970S, AQD researchers achieved a breakthrough in inducing milkfish broodstock from the wild to spawn. Subsequently, AQD reared fry to breeders in cages and tanks. Then, eggs from captive breeders supported the development of milkfish hatchery fry production technology. This was in response to the need for an alternative source of milkfish fry to augment the requirements of fishpond operators, especially when a large number is needed at one time.
