Group cites 'gains' with creation of fishery, aquatic resources dept
Excerpt
Advocacy group Tugon Kabuhayan has thrown its support behind the creation of a Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR), saying the proposed agency could streamline and integrate programs aimed at improving the country’s fisheries output. The group said the creation of a department level office focusing exclusively on the country’s marine resources could increase output by at least 8 percent. Citing the experience of Sri Lanka, the group said the South Asian nation’s fisheries production grew by 8 percent, three years after the creation of a DFAR-like agency that led to more efficient implementation of programs and enforcement of laws.
