The World Wetlands Day celebrated this month underscored the immense value of wetlands and the need to protect them. As the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – 6 (DENR-6) led the region in joining the rest of the country in celebrating the global event, its Regional Executive Director, Francisco E. Milla, Jr. drove home the message. “It is important to protect and preserve our wetlands here in Western Visayas, not only because they are home to a wide range species of plants and water animals, but they also help sustain the livelihood of people who live near them, said Milla on their website. “They help in keeping the water quality clean as they filter chemicals from agricultural runoff before it reaches the open water.”en
