Mangroves are now being harness as potential food source by the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center - Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD) that initiated a Mangrove-Friendly Aquaculture (MFA) Project in 1997. Mangroves are tropical trees and shrubs that grows in inter-tidal areas. They are also referred to as forest communities with their associated microorganism (bacteria, fungi, algae) and fauna (molluses, crabs, shrimps and fish). True mangrove species number around 54 worldwide.
