The government-hosted, Tigbauan, Iloilo-based Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD) has also been conducting research on the seahorse. Started in 1996, the SEAFDEC AQD ornamental seahorse project focuses on the development of captive breeders for fry production and juveniles, specifically of two species - Hippocampus kuda and H. barbouri. AEAFDEC AQD, currently headed by Dr. Rolando R. Platon, reported that the program has successfully produced hatchery-reared broodstock (breeder) and second-generation offspring.
