There is now "severe pollution" in the Pasig River following the oil spill that occurred near the Old Panaderos area in Sta. Ana, Manila, last Sunday, the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) declared yesterday. The Commission noted that oil and grease level within the oil spill area in the Pasig River was 72 times higher than the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) standard for water quality. According to Merliza Bonga, head of the environmental management division of PRRC, the oil boom was 143.72 milligrams per liter (mg/L). The DENR standard is pegged at 2 mg/L.
