    Excerpt
The Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamamalakaya) is blaming the recurrent fish kills in Lake Bito, Leyte, on the quarrying of black sand. Pamalakaya and the Tacloban-based Eastern Visayas Ecumenical Forum (EVEF) called on Environment Secretary Ramon Paje to stop by the Nicua Mining Corp. (NMC) from quarrying in irrigated agricultural land in Barangays Villa Imelda and Pongon in MacArthur, Leyte. NMC, they added, is a Chinese company that had been working in the area nonstop since June 10, 2010, causing the destruction of irrigation facilities that serve 14 barangays and fish kills in Lake Bito that started in March.
