    Excerpt
A total of 238 cases of violations of fishery laws and municipal ordinances have been filed in courts against commercial and municipal fishing operators in Western Visayas. The filing of the cases was made from July 1, 2016 to last June 30, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional office said in a press report. Some of the common fishery violations are use of active gears in municipal waters, unauthorized fishing, use of fine mesh net, and use of gear destructive to coral reefs and other marine habitat.
