Excerpt
Ten fishermen, including a 74-year-old grandfather, were arrested when local authorities started a crackdown against illegal fishing in Marinduque the other day. Investigation disclosed that personnel of the Sta. Cruz Municipal Police Station were conducting seaborne patrol operations at the municipal seawaters of Sta. Cruz last January 24 about 6 a.m. when they intercepted a group of persons on board a commercial fishing boat named “F/B Sheilannie” while in the act of fishing almost 2.5 kilometers away from shoreline of Salamague Islet. The fishermen used active fishing gear and a commercial fishing vessel with 2.72 gross tonnage which is prohibited under section 19, paragraph 3 of Municipal Ordinance No. 43 passed in 2002. Their catch of about 20 kilograms of fish was confiscated.
