Consuming milkfish, tilapia, carp, mudfish, cream dory or kanduli that thrive in Laguna de Bay may be fatal after health experts said the bay was full of heavy metals accumulation that could cause serious ailments, including cancer. This was the warning given by Dr. Victorio B. Molina, an associate professor in public health at the College of Public Health of the University of the Philippines in Manila (CPH-UPM), in a recent article on Acta Medica Philippina, the national health science journal published since 1939. In his article entitled “Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Fish from Laguna de Bay: An Assessment of Health Risks from Heavy Metals Bio-accumulation in Fish,” Molina said “fish samples of bangus, bighead carp, dalag, kanduli, and tilapia collected during the wet and dry seasons were analyzed for cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, and chromium.en
