Vendors at wet markets all over Cebu city are complaining about slow sales of all kinds of shellfish following reports that 12 persons have landed in various hospitals in nearby Bohol province due to red tide poisoning. A visit to several markets in and around the city, showed that shoppers have been avoiding all kinds of marine products, particularly tahong and other bivalves, which have been identified as the carriers of the toxin. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reymoses Cabagnot has issued an advisory to all Rural Health Units in Bohol. He is also advising the public to avoid eating all kinds of shellfish, including crabs known locally as “lambay” or “kasag” as their digestive system carries the poison.en
