A Church leader has called for transparency and accountability in the rehabilitation of the Tubbataha Reef in Palawan, following the ₱87 million paid by the US government in compensation for the damage caused by its vessels, the "USS Guardian" that ran aground the reef in 2013. Bishop Pedro Arigo of the Prelature of Puerto Princesa called on authorities to exercise "transparency and accountability on how they intend to use the huge amount given the culture of corruption in the country." The US Navy minesweeper USS Guardian ran aground the Tubataha Reef and National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on Jan. 17, 2013, damaging an area of 2,345.67 square meters.
