    Excerpt
A petition for a nationwide ban on the use of single-use plastic has been signed by 31 coastal local government units (LGUs). Faced with twin problems of massive flooding and uncontrollable material waste, LGUs in the country carry the burden of addressing obstacles, made more difficult by the pandemic. “The Philippines is an archipelagic country, and [waste is] sure to flow and swell into marine litter that endanger our fisheries and ocean ecosystem. No wonder that these provinces, cities and municipalities are now speaking out. May the political will of the commission be harnessed to reduce the plastic menace from the source,” said Oceana Vice President Gloria Estenzo Ramos.
