Boracay Island, Aklan — Significant growth has been seen in the marine ecosystem of this resort island attributed to the ongoing reef rehabilitation project of a local non-government organization. Live corals in the island have increased due to the continued “reefurbishment” activities in different reef areas here conducted by the Boracay Foundation Incorporated (BFI). Coral “reefurbishment” is one activity conducted in line with BFI’s Coastal Resource Management Project under its Boracay Beach Management Program (BBMP). The project’s main goal is to improve and increase the marine life, especially the coral reefs of Boracay damaged by natural occurrences such as storms and human activities due to the island’s tourism.en
