Scientists from Canada, Japan, Philippines and Thailand and fisheries from Southeast Asia countries will gather in Iloilo City on July 13 to 15 to discuss the restocking of coastal waters with species that had been depleted by over-fishing and habitat destruction. The meeting is entitled the Regional Technical Consultation on Stock Enhancement of Threatened Species of International Concern to be held by the aquaculture department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) at the Iloilo Business Hotel in Manduriao, Iloilo City. Stock Enhancement means releasing the young or juveniles of a depleted or threatened species in natural waters to become part of the common fishery stocks. There they grow on natural food and fend off predators(which include humans) until they produce and their offspring can reach the desired size for market or harvest. In the sea, stock enhancement is sea ranching.
