Nanawagan si United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sa sampung mga kasaping bansa ng Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) sa unang bahagi ng buwang ito na manindigan sa China sa kanilang mga pagtatalo sa teritoryo sa South China Sea at maaasahan nila ang suporta ng US. Kalmado ang tugon ng ASEAN sa panawagan ng US. “We don’t want to get trapped by this rivalry,” sinabi ni Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. Ang mga estadong kasapi ng ASEAN ay nag-isyu ng magkasamang pahayag na mayroon nang progreso sa mga negosasyon upang makagawa ng isang Code of Conduct sa South China Sea na naaayon sa internasyunal na batas, kasama na ang United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Pangarap ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ng Pilipinas at President Xi Jinping ng China ang pagguhit ng naturang Code of Conduct sa South China Sea nang sila ang namuno bilang cochairman ng ASEAN-China Summit dalawang taon na ang nakalilipas sa Beijing.
