    Diretsahang ibinasura ng administrasyon ni President Donald Trump ang halos lahat ng mga pangaangkin ng Beijing sa South China Sea. Sa dating U.S. policy, iginigiit na ang maritime disputes sa pagitan ng China at mas maliliit nitong katabing bansa ay kailangang mapayapang resolbahin sa pamamagitan. Ngunit sa isang pahayag na inilabas nitong Lunes, sinabi ni Secretary of State Mike Pompeo na itinuturing na ngayon ng U.S. na illegitimate ang halos lahat ng Chinese maritime claims sa labas ng internationally recognized waters. Hindi kasama sa pagbabago ng pananaw ang mga iringan kaugnay sa land features na above sea level, na itinuturing na “territorial” in nature.
