BFAR promotes value-added products from oyster
Excerpt
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) office in Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) said that with the increasing production of oysters particularly in Cagayan province, oyster producers can expect more income with the introduction of value-added oyster products. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), production of oyster in Region 2 continued to rise since 2016, which could boost value-adding of the marine species. PSA records showed that from 648 metric tons (MT) in 2016, oyster production in Region 2 region rose to 709 metric tons in 2018. Arlene Tacuycuy, BFAR-Region 2 Fish Processing Laboratory chief, said the agency has started introducing new value-added products, particularly in the top oyster producing municipalities such as Buguey, Santa Teresita, Gonzaga and Sanchez Mira.
