    Excerpt
Time was when the Iloilo town of Carles was dubbed the "Alaska of the Philippines". The northernmost town of Iloilo's fifth district situated 147 kilometers north of Iloilo City, Carles has the longest coastline in the country, its 18 barangays being islands. But its once fertile fishing grounds had been considerably depleted in recent years owing to the use of destructive fishing methods by many fishermen.
