Researchers of a Southeast Asian center have found a strain of toxin-producing algae that may have caused fishkills in the Laguna Lake. Scientists of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD) have determined the toxin concentration in populations of Microsytis aeruginosa, a blue-green algae predominantly found in Laguna de Bay, the country's largest freshwater lake. "We are conducting a series of experiments in studying this toxin-producing algae as one of the possible causes of fishkills in the lake," reported SEAFDEC AQD researchers Susan Baldia and Malou Aralar.
