In many dirt poor fishing villages in the country, women work more than the men, debunking the myth that the men are principal breadwinners while the women ae mere help mates relegated to perform routine household chores. A case study has noted that women perform important roles in fishing villages as what was documented among the 12 households in Binaobawan, in Pilar town, Capiz. The case study entitled "Women and the Question of Sustainable Development in the Philippines Fishing Village" was conducted Susana Siar and Lyn Cañeba, researchers of the Iloilo-based Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC).
