British tourist Christian Licursi and his Canadian friend, Michelle Girouard, attach small coral fragments to a framed plastic screen holder. They are joined by other volunteers on a floating platform, about a kilometer from Boracay Island’s coastline. The fragments, collected from damaged corals, are individually placed on the screen holder before scuba divers bring them to a depth of about 15 feet for transplanting into the coral reefs using a special clay epoxy. The volunteers hope that the 100 fragments they transplanted that day will grow so that the coral reefs will be rehabilitated.en
