First, the good news: two valuable mollusks, the "kapis" (Placuna placenta) or windowpane oysters and "bay-ad" (Placuna sp.) have made a comeback near the shores of Iloilo province. And now the bad news: they may soon disappear like they did in early 1990's because it is hard to keep at bay the harvesters who indiscriminately gather them and destroy their beds. Kapis, also known as "lampirong," is a bivalve mollusk with translucent shell and small body. The creatures used to abound in the coastal waters of the southern towns of Oton, Tigbauan, and Guimbal along the Gulf of Panay.
