First the good news: two valuable mollusks, kapis (Placuna placenta) or window-pane oysters and bay-ad (Placuna sp.) have made a comeback in the nearshore waters of Iloilo province. And now the bad news: but they may soon disappear like they did the early 1990s because it is hard to keep at bay the harvesters who indiscriminately gather them and destroy their beds. Kapis, also known as lampirong here, is a bivalve mollusk with translucent shell and small body. They used to abound in the coastal waters of the southern towns of Oton, Tigbauan, and Guimbal along the Gulf of Panay. Bay-ad is a close cousin of Kapis and known to thrive in the Banate Bay along the coasts of the Northern towns of Leganes, Barotac Nuevo, Anilao, Dumangas, and Banate.en
