Among the famous historical towns in Iloilo is Tigbauan, a 52-barangay municipality 22.5 kilometers away from Iloilo City. Bounded in the northwest by the municipality of San Miguel, in the east by the town of Oton and Iloilo Strait in the south, Katigbawan or field of reeds (old name) was discovered sometime in 1575. With a land area of 6,062 hectares south of Iloilo City, Tigbauan may not have mineral resources of commercial and industrial quantity, but it ranks among the most notable areas in the Philippines. Being among the leading municipalities in terms of fish production, the establishment of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (Seafdec) in Brgy. Buyu-an is a fitting undertaking that caters information and technical services on bangus and prawn culture, with complete amenities and facilities thru their physical plant and sub-stations.
