President Duterte said he plans to visit the Philippine Rise soon in connection with the anniversary of the intercontinental shelf that was awarded to the country by the United Nations in 2012. The President on May 16, 2017, through Executive Order 25, renamed then Benham Rise as Philippine Rise. It was awarded by the UN to the Philippines in April 2012. The President last year renamed the Benham Rise to Philippine Rise after some Chinese research vessels were seen in the area.
