The first week of July 2006 was proclaimed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as National Biotechnology Week with the theme "Securing the Philippines' Niche in the Global Bio-Enterprise”. In connection with the observance here in Iloilo, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) and the University of the Philippines in the Visayas-National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPV-NIMBB) is currently conducting a two-day National Symposium of Fisheries and Aquatic Biotechnology at the SEAFDEC Headquarters in Tigbauan, Iloilo. The theme of the two-day symposium focused on "Challenges Opportunities and Constraints in Fisheries Biotechnology.
