DA puts up P282-M storage facilities in 91 fishing ground
Excerpt
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to build P282.5-million cold storage facilities in 91 fishing grounds across the country to reduce post-harvest losses and improve overall fish production. In a statement on Thursday, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the DA is targeting to provide ice-making facilities in various fishing grounds until the end of the closed fishing season in March next year. This is needed because 40 percent of the fish caught was already spoiled before it reached the sellers, he added. In the Philippines, the closed fishing season is usually from November to March, to give way for small fish to grow and be ready for appropriate time harvesting.
