Local seaweed products are assured of a steady market in the United States as the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that carrageenan, a seaweed-derived substance will remain in its list of approved additives in organic food. The 2018 Sunset Review of the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service found, merit in public comments supporting the renewal of carrageenan in USDA's National List of Allowed Substances. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the country produce 1,415,320.79 metric tins (MT) of seaweed last year, up by 0.8 percent from 2016's 1.404,518.23 MT.
