The Department of Tourism (DOT-6) said it is challenged by the slow compliance of business establishments in Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan three months before it reopens to tourists in October 2018. DOT-6 regional director and lawyer Helen Catalbas reported that only less than 200 out of the 2,269 tourist establishments in the island are compliant, based on the figure given by the Boracay Inspection Committee. The requisites include environmental requirements, fire safety clearance, and legal requirements, among others. Boracay has been closed to tourism since April due to sewage woes and non-compliance to environmental regulations by establishments. The closure gave way to rehabilitation efforts on the island.en
