local.seafdecaqd.extractThe National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) yesterday filed criminal charges against Malay, Aklan town Mayor Ceriron Cawaling, local officials and private corporations before the Department of Justice (DOJ) in relation to the Boracay Island environmental crisis. An NBI official privy to the investigation but who requested anonymity said the NBI Environmental Crime division filed charges of violations of the Revised Forestry Code, Philippine Fisheries Code, and Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act against Cawaling, former Malay mayor John Yap, municipal engineer and building official Elizer Casidsid, Kalibo municipal assessor Erlinda Casimero and Aklan provincial Assessor Kokoy Soguilon. Boracay West Cove, a popular resort on Diniwid Beach, was one of the establishments ordered closed by the authorities as part of the crackdown on establishments that violated environmental laws in the island.en
