Based on 2012 figures by the food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Philippines ranked among the major fish producing countries in the world. It has a total production of 3.1 million tonnes of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and other aquatic animals. The fishery sector contributes close to 1.9% of the country's gross domestic products and employs over one million people.
