Boracay ready for reopen; gov't orders casino closure
Excerpt
The Philippines reopens its crown jewel resort Boracay Island to holidaymakers on Friday, after a six-month cleanup aimed at repairing the damage inflicted by years of unrestrained mass tourism. President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the island shuttered in April for a major effort to fortify weak infrastructure and crack down on the rampant over-development that had left it a “cesspool.” And three of Duterte’s Cabinet members have asked the gaming regulators to cancel the operations of any casino in Boracay days ahead of its official reopening.
