Mangrove forests have extreme importance to the environment and mankind. They gave protection against tsunamis and hurricanes, and serve as home to a large variety of fish, crab, shrimp and other aquatic species. Despite these benefits and the enactment of Republic Act 7161 that bans the cutting of all mangrove species, mangrove forest are still getting denuded due to excessive cutting of mangrove timber that are either converted into charcoal to serve as fuel, or used as construction material to build houses.
