Guimaras farmers urged to improve production
Excerpt
To cater to the demands of tourists for agricultural products, farmers in Buenavista, Guimaras were encouraged to produce more safe, affordable and sufficient agricultural products. During the Farmers’ Congress in the province recently, Dr. Joyce Wendam, DA-6 regional technical director for policy, planning and research, told the town’s 500 farmers, fisherfolk and livestock raisers that Guimaras is an agri-tourism destination in Western Visayas. Region 6 has approximately four million tourists yearly, and the island-province is one of the prime destinations, he said. “We need to increase production of prime commodities such as rice, high value crops, livestock and fisheries to cater the food requirement of these tourists,” added Wendam.
