Eastern Visayas region targets rebound in fisheries output
Excerpt
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources(BFAR) is targeting the restoration of regional fishery production this year back to 2012 levels after more than a year of post-Haiyan rehabilitation activity. BFAR Regional Director Juan D. Albaladejo said the agency is optimistic of hitting the 188,000 metric tons(MT) level achieved by Eastern Visayas three years ago, recovering from an output of 137,518 MT in 2014 after damage sustained from super-typhoon Yolanda in November 2013. With about 500 fish cages and most commercial fishing boats damaged by super-typhoon Yolanda, aquaculture output dipped to 30,791 MT in 2014 from 34,501 MT a year earlier while commercial fishery yields from deep sea operations also declined to 30,240 MT from 41,928 MT.
