A cooperative suspected that the high coliform level in the waters in this island resort was causing mass coral die-off. A member of the Sankalikasan Producers Cooperative, Jose Rodriguez, said they have monitored two usual events leading to the death of corals last year. One of them, he said, was the "population explosion" of crown-of-thorns, a starfish species that feeds on stony coral polyps.
