Western Visayas’ strong fish supply has kept prices of local fishery products stable despite surging fuel costs driven by tensions in the Middle East, with the region posting a 118% fish sufficiency rate, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-6). BFAR-6 regional director Remia Aparri said the region’s surplus production has so far insulated local markets from price shocks, even as rising fuel prices threaten to drive up costs in the transport and fishing sectors. Aparri said she has been personally monitoring market conditions, particularly at the Estancia fish port, a key distribution hub whose pricing trends influence seafood markets across the province.en
