The Mandaue City Government is mobilizing a 4-kilometer desilting operation along the Butuanon River to protect low-lying communities from chronic flooding. This project relies on a P100-million local flood control budget and a partnership with San Miguel Corporation (SMC) that runs until April 2027. Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano said the river-clearing project aims to double or triple the waterway’s flow capacity. The project addresses bottleneck zones that leave riverside residents vulnerable to sudden floods. The dredging and desilting operations span a 4-kilometer stretch from the mouth of the Butuanon River to an area past Pacific Mall.
