Environmental authorities have launched a scientific investigation into a dramatic coastal uplift along portions of Sarangani Province after the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Mindanao on June 8 raised sections of the seabed by as much as two meters, exposing extensive coral reefs, seagrass beds, and marine habitats to the air. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) of Sarangani began validating reports of unusual shoreline changes days after residents in coastal communities of Glan observed that seawater levels had remained abnormally low following the earthquake.en
