The country has opened its first research and development (R&D) center dedicated to salt as part of efforts to strengthen local production in an industry long dominated by imports. The Accelerating Salt Research and Innovation (ASIN) Center, funded with P43 million in government support, was inaugurated last February 17 at Pangasinan State University, marking its formal start of operations. The facility is expected to address long-standing gaps in technology and research that have resulted in the Philippines importing as much as 93 percent of its salt supply over the years.en
