Coastal works drive ocean economy growth
Excerpt
Engineered structures built along shorelines to guard against erosion, storm surges and wave action emerged as the strongest driver of the country’s ocean economy in 2024, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported. PSA data showed that the coastal engineering projects logged the highest growth rate among ocean-based activities at 61.3 percent, outpacing other subsectors such as coastal accommodation and food services (34.8 percent) and marine education (13.9 percent). Overall, the ocean economy was valued at P1.01 trillion last year, expanding 4.7 percent from P962.49 billion in 2023. Its gross value added accounted for 3.8 percent of gross domestic product at current prices.
