Solar and wind energy are widely regarded as the best sources of nonfossil fuel energy. Offshore wind (OSW) power generation has a potential of 178 gigawatts (GW), according to a World Bank study. If tapped and developed, it can overwhelmingly resolve the country’s energy needs: the required additional 8,000 megawatts of power generation capacity by 2028, as forecasted by the Department of Energy (DOE); the government’s goal of increasing renewables in the energy mix to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040; and the long-term target of the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Program of adding 27 GW of new solar capacity by 2040.
